What is lye and can we make soap without it?  Lye is sodium hydroxide and is a key ingredient in cold process soap making. It is a strong alkali that reacts with oils through a process called saponification, transforming them into soap. Without lye, soap just wouldn't happen.  It is essential for creating that bubbly goodness we all love!
